Over 150 Pittsburghers to participate in Travelers Aid Transit Treasure Hunt: a City-Wide Urban Adventure by Bus!

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On Sept. 19, over 150 Pittsburghers are expected to participate in the first ever Travelers Aid Transit Treasure Hunt, a city-wide urban adventure. The awareness event is sponsored by Travelers Aid in partnership with the Port Authority Transit of Allegheny County, The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, Venture Outdoors, and Know Where To Go. Participants will follow clues, solve riddles, and compete to win great prizes. There is just one rule: they have to ride the bus!

A United Way nonprofit organization established in 1921, Travelers Aid helps thousands of low income and at risk residents of Allegheny County to attend medical appointments, new jobs, childcare, and other necessary parts of everyday living. “We utilize almost exclusively public transportation for our programs in order to minimize overhead and maximize the impact of those in need,” says Robert H. Lindner, executive director. “We are a little known or advertised agency working quietly behind the scenes to keep Pittsburgh moving.”

The Treasure Hunt will kick off at the Grant Street Transportation Center, formerly known as the Greyhound Bus station, at 11th and Liberty Ave., downtown, on September 19th at noon. Councilman Bill Peduto will provide the opening remarks before sending the teams into Downtown, the Southside, the Strip District, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, the Hill District, and Oakland. There they will solve riddles, find clues, and uncover treasures associated with historically significant Pittsburghers.

After the Treasure Hunt, teams will return to the starting point for refreshments, awards meet and greet activities, live music and entertainment. Included in the festivities will be Chinese and Silent auctions.

Funds raised through this event, along with support from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, private foundations, the United Way, and other individual donors will help Travelers Aid continue to help the people that depend on its services.

Registration for the Travelers Aid Transit Treasure Hunt is $25 for adults. (Adults that register by September 4th will receive a $5 discount.) Seniors over 55 is $10. Children/students age six to 21 is $10. For more information, or to register, visit: travelersaidpgh.org or call Travelers Aid at 412-281-5474.
